Lake Como

Como city and lake

Lake Como viewLago di Como - Lake Como - is Italy's third largest lake after Lake Garda and Lake Maggiore, located in the Lombardy region of northern Italy. It is 46 kilometers long and 45 kilometers at its widest point. The lake is 410 meters deep, making it one of the deepest in Europe.

Lake Como is a day trip away from Milan, just over 54 kilometers by car on Autostrada 36 and E62.

The lake and its surroundings have been a destination for aristocrats since Roman times. Its attractiveness is based on a combination of fresh air and water, good climate and the surrounding mountains.

The city of Como is the largest of the cities located at the southern end of Lake Como, with about 78,000 inhabitants, near the border with Switzerland.

It is an excellent base for exploring the surrounding area and cities. The city also has a cathedral.

The cable car takes you from Como to Brunate halfway up the mountain that surrounds Lake Como. From there you have a beautiful view of the area - but if you're prepared to hike a bit to San Maurizio, the view is even more breathtaking.

Renting a house in Lake Como

Renting a "private" residence for your weekend trip to Como can, not surprisingly, be expensive. But no pain no gain, see what is offered at Booking.com, there are places for under 50000kr further down the page 🙂 .

Swimming in the lake

For those who want to swim in the relatively cold but refreshing water, there is a sandy beach at the neighboring town of Perledo.

If you want to try Italian cuisine, there's a good selection of nice restaurants, cozy shops and stunning views of Lake Como's impressive mountains and surrounding towns, including Bellagio and Menaggio.

It is possible to arrive in Varenna by car, boat and train.

A worthwhile excursion starts from Varenna's pier, where the ferry docks, where the scenic and romantic Passeggiata degli Innamorati (Lovers' Walk) runs along the edge of the lake and leads to the historic center of the town.

Other cities around Lake Como

The town of Colico is at the northern end of the lake and the towns of Como and Lecco are located in the southern part of the lake, but in separate bays. From Colico there is a boat service to Como and Lecco. There are also rail and road connections to Milan, via Lecco, on the south-eastern shore of Lake Como.

Colico is worth a visit because of its views down to the lake.

The town also has a historic World War II fort, open to visitors once a week.

A place along Lake Como that also attracts tourists is Varenna, a small fishing town with colorful houses, located on the middle, eastern part of the lake, 20 kilometers northwest of Lecco.

Villa Monastero

The city also boasts the famous villa - Villa Monastero - located on the lake with an extraordinary view.

The villa was originally a Cistercian monastery, probably founded in the 12th century. In 2005, Villa Monastero was given the title of "Casa Museo" in Lombardy and its fourteen rooms are open to visitors.

The botanical garden is something special for flower lovers. In 2013, over 1 000 new species were planted.

At any time of the year, visitors can enjoy a real explosion of colors, shapes and scents. Villa Monastero is also an international conference center.

Bellagio

The town of Bellagio is located where the lake's two large southern bays meet in the north. The town's only 5-star hotel - the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni - is Bellagio's landmark.

The hotel has a fantastic swimming pool, and the terrace overlooks the lake. The hotel has its own bathing jetty and sun loungers on the shore. Other hotels in Bellagio.

Griante

The village of Griante is located on the western plateau of Lake Como. This small village is well worth a visit because of its spectacular views and the surrounding villas.

At the top of a hillside is the village church. The towns of Bellagio and Varenna lie across the lake and are easily accessible by ferry from the village.

Interesting destinations near Griante include Villa Carlotta, Como's famous botanical destination.

It is located in Tremezzo, a town just next to Griante.

Villa Balbianello is just a few kilometers from Lenno. Golf enthusiasts can play at the beautiful Menaggio & Cadenabbia Golf Club which is nestled in the mountains just a few minutes away.

Menaggio

The picturesque town of Menaggio, with its ancient origins, spreads out on the western shore of Lake Como.

The town is beloved for its elegant lakeside promenade and proximity to Bellagio, Varenna and Tremezzina. The upper part of the town has retained a medieval appearance.

There is a hostel but it is usually full on weekends so keep that in mind.

In addition, only pedestrians are allowed in the heart of the city, which is filled with cafés, gelaterias, a miniature golf course and snack bar, as well as several restaurants.

Tremezzo

Tremezzo is one of the most popular tourist attractions of Lake Como, located opposite Bellagio, with a great view of the lake and the Grigne mountains. It is part of the municipality of Tremezzina.

The fantastic villas and large hotels built from the 19th to the 20th century have made Tremezzo an international tourist destination.

An excursion not to be missed is to Mount Crocione, at an altitude of 1,641 meters. You go up to the mountain on a dirt road to Intignano, and then continue on a donkey trail for about 3 hours before reaching the top.
