Milan football teams and tickets

Illuminated football pitch in the evening

The two dominant men's football teams in Milan are AC Milan and FC Internazionale Milano (Inter), which both play in Serie A, the country's top league. Both teams have won the UEFA Champions League, making Milan the only city in Europe to have two clubs that have won that title. Incidentally, AC Milan have won the UEFA Champions League title seven times.

AC Milan has won the Scudetton, the Serie A title, 18 times, the same number as Inter. It has come second on 16 occasions and in thirteen seasons it has finished third. The team has also been in Serie A for all seasons from 1929/30, the exception being the early 1980s when the team played two seasons in Serie B.

Has won 18 international titles

Tired footballAC Milan has won 18 international titles, making it - together with the Argentinian team Boca Juniors - the most successful club team in the world. The club won seven titles in 1988/89, which is a club record for most titles won in one season.

The club was formed on December 16, 1899 and was named the Milan Cricket and Football Club. The club was founded by the Englishman Herbert Kilpin. After winning the first title - the Medaglia del Rei - in January 1900, the following year the club won the Italian league for the first time. Incidentally, it was Kilpin who decided that the colors of the uniforms should be red and black.

Swedes who have played for the club include Gunnar Gren, Gunnar Nordahl and Nils Liedholm, (known by the acronym Gre-No-Li), who together moved to Milan in 1949. The Swedish players contributed to the club's heyday in the 1950s.

Nordahl is one of the club's and Serie A's all-time leading scorers. For 66 years, he held the record for a single season in Serie A - 35 goals in the 1949/50 season despite playing fewer games than nowadays. The record stood until 2015/2016.

Liedholm coached the club for three periods and won a league title with the club in 1978/1979. In recent years, Jesper Blomqvist (1996-1997) and Zlatan Ibrahimovic (2010-2012) have played for AC Milan. Ibrahimović won the Serie A scoring title with 28 goals in the 2011/12 season.

Inter - a club for everyone

Internazionale MilanoIts rival Inter was formed in 1908 after some breakaway players left AC Milan when the team decided that only 'purebred' Italians would be allowed to play for the club. Inter was formed with the idea that everyone, regardless of origin, religion or race, should be allowed to participate, and so the name Internazionale Milano was chosen.

Inter is the only team in Italy that has always played in Serie A. The team won its first league championship back in 1910. It has also won the Champions League/European Cup title three times, as many as the Uefa Europa League/Uefa Cup.

Swedes who have played for the club are Zlatan Ibrahimovic, 2006-2009, Bengt Lindskog (1958-1961), Lennart "Nacka Skoglund" (1950-1959) and his son Evert Skoglund (1970-1974).
