The history of Milan is centered around the system of canals that winds its way throughout the city. The excavation of the Naviglio Grande canal began in 1177 and was one of the first and most important canals in the Lombardy area during the Middle Ages.
It took about 80 years to construct the canal, which today is about 50 kilometers long and from 22 to 50 meters wide.
Until the 14th century, the Naviglio stretched only between the Ticino River and the center of Milan and was used to transport various goods, mainly the beautiful white, green and pink marble used to build Il Duomo Cathedral, Milan's main attraction today, which began its long journey in 1296.
During the fascinating tour through the beautiful landscape, you can see typical Milanese houses such as those in the town of Cassinetta di Lugagnano, art and craft shops, antique shops, hundreds of cafes, bars and outdoor cafes in a special and cozy atmosphere, and the large residential villas with fenced courtyards from the early 20th century.
Naviglio Grande certainly invites you to take a nice boat ride through one of Milan's undoubtedly most picturesque areas.
Within walking distance along the canal you can visit churches, basilicas and other historical sites and attractions. In short, an experience you should not go home without.
